The words “big” and “graceful” are hardly ever used to describe a single object, but the early cutlery industry produced a fair share of massive, intimidating knives that were designed to tastefully exhibit and possibly amplify a gentleman’s station in life. This big, beautiful replica is copied from a very nice (and expensive) knife from early America that is featured on page 115 of The Antique Bowie Knife Book (printed in 1990, and one of the first books to showcase a large collection of some of the world’s finest Bowie's).
Made by a New Orleans cutler, it sported a fancy guard that utilized an integral finger ring. The original Bowie featured a handle with slabs of ivory and silver rivets. This replica substitutes black buffalo horn and nickel silver hardware. The blade swells very gently towards the sharply pointed tip to add chopping power. The front 5” of the top edge of the blade is sharpened. The owners of the original knife took care to preserve the sheath and
even the belt that came with it, and this reproduction comes with both! (Because of logistical complications of making different size belts for a knife, belt and sheath set, the belt is made in one size long enough to fit waist sizes 32” - 49”.)
